I remember as a kid getting hold of the 1979 Merc catalogue - these things seemed so unattainable. 240Ds with 4 speed gearboxes! This was probably the few years when Mercedes were at their highest build quality.

You nailed it. These things were spaceships and the ultimate in over-engineered luxury.

I've driven a 300TD, 240D, 300SD, and 450SL of the period. The doors sounded like bank vaults. The next-gen 380SEC I drove that a friend was impressive, but not the same. My own '87 300D was equally impressive, but lacked the feel of the 1980-ish cars.
